So the Frightened Rabbit concert got me wondering what the best Scottish bands were. The Irish and the British get all sorts of glory, but not the Scots. There's Admiral Fallow, FR's sound a like twin. And We Were Promised Jetpacks. But who else?
There's Big Country, best known for "In a Big Country." Del Amitri's Roll to Me. The Proclaimers. Simple Minds.
Travis might be the best known one. And Franz Ferdinand; I guess I just assumed they were British. "Take Me Out" is such a great song. The Twilight Sad is another. And Belle & Sebastian, of course. And the Fratellis! Love them, too. Glasvegas is another good example.
Emma Pollock is another favorite solo artist; check out "Red Orange Green." And did you know she studied physics? And Amy MacDonald...what happened to her? And Paolo Nutoni--I never knew he was Scottish. KT Tunstall, too. Another favorite. And Shirley Manson is also Scottish, which I never knew.
Going back a couple of decades, the Soup Dragons and Jesus and Mary Chain are both Scottish.
Who am I missing? I will say that Scottish music rivals, if not surpasses, the Irish. But for U2...
