Rolling Stone lists the artists who the magazine believes will stand the test of time.
Pearl Jam and Green Day make sense, of course. Of more recent artists? I'd add the National, who already have a decade of solid releases behind them and keep releasing great new albums. And of lesser artists, I think someone like Brandi Carlile could have a long career because of the timeliness of her voice and her ability to transcend the genres with her mix of country-folk-pop, etc. I think singer-songwriters like Josh Ritter and Justin Townes Earle will both be around for a long-time. Too much talent, and being able to sound "timeless" helps, too.
Who knows if we'll be truly listening to Kanye West or Taylor Swift in a decade. They need to change with the times in a way, because their sound is more current. But groups like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Bush are still played on the radio today, two decades after their debuts. But perhaps that says more about the quality of radio, right?
