Fanfarlo Concert

I had the pleasure, for the third time, of seeing Fanfarlo in concert at the U Street Music Hall.

Nothing beat seeing them at the the Red Palace (RIP), but it was a great show as they wrapped up their U.S. tour. Highlights? A Distance, of course, Ghosts, and Harold T. Wilkins. And their grand finale of "The Walls Are Coming Down." Their horn player is seriously ridiculously great. I mean, that made the show. You could tell the band was a bit tired. Lillies on Mars opened, and while we only saw part of the set, they were a great complement. Will try to update with a playlist, but it was similar to this one.

Concert Weekend

Not one but two shows to see this weekend: Fanfarlo is back at the U Street Music Hall with opener Lilies on Mars. And Better than Ezra returns again to a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club. They've got some new music coming in 2014. Jon McLaughlin opens. The latter always performs an excellent show. Fanfarlo is not in the best venue, but their new album is awesome and you can't got wrong with their stellar earlier hits. Should be a good weekend. Just wish BTE was not on Sunday night...

New Fanfarlo: "Let's Go Extinct"

Though at least a few of the tracks on the new Fanfarlo album were already familiar to me (A Distance, Myth of Myself), many others were new. I've been loving my first few listens, and several tracks like "A Cell" and "Landlocked" are stand-outs. I'm very excited to see them in concern in DC in April. Buy this album!

New Fanfarlo

The Fanfarlo album is streaming now. "Myth of Myself" and "A Distance" are two of the tracks I already love. Greatly anticipating this one next Tuesday!

New Fanfarlo Song

I am digging the new Fanfarlo track "Landlocked." Listen to that and get the Sea EP for free here. "Let's Go Extinct" is released two weeks from today, on February 11.

New Fanfarlo

I'm really enjoying the new Fanfarlo EP The Sea. Check out some songs here in this BBC interview. I'd single out "A Distance" as a top quality, pop-soundy track.

New Head and the Heart and Fanfarlo

The Head and the Heart released their second album today. Early standouts include "Another Story" and "Let's Be Still." The Avett Brothers & Pearl Jam also join the new release crowd; perhaps both will be downloaded later.

I also downloaded the Fanfarlo EP yesterday. "The Sea" is an excellent short cut, and as previously mentioned, "The Distance" is an excellent track.

Another Fanfarlo Single

"A Distance" is the latest Fanfarlo single, and I really like it. The album is out October 14.

Fanfarlo Kind of Morning

After a long drive to Dulles (though with surprisingly little traffic) and a long three week stretch of work, I'm ready for the weekend with some Fanfarlo. "Harold T. Wilkins" is in my five favorite songs, ever.

What music standbys always work? Frightened Rabbit. Cave Singers. The National. Snow Patrol, perhaps.

Weekly Sample

I've really enjoyed the Horse Feathers and the Spiritualized streams this week.

Love these Fanfarlo and Justin Townes Earle shows.

Gomez has some concert downloads.

Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" is pretty darn catchy.  And the album is on sale.

Fanfarlo Take Two

We saw Fanfarlo last night at the U Street Music Hall.  Despite what was a bad night for them (apparently a van braekdown and lack of soundcheck), the concert was fun.  They played quite a bit of "Rooms Filled with Light," though I still think the highlight was Harold T. Wilkins, which closed out their main set. They only played "Bones" and "I'm a Pilot" for their encore. We definitely enjoyed the Red Palace show more, which was a bit more intimate and experimental, since it was several months before their new "baby" was born.  However, it is such good music, and we enjoyed it. I think "Tunguska" was really the only new track off their new album they didn't play that we would have liked to hear. Replicate, Deconstruction, Tightrope, Feathers...all of our favorites.  As for the venue, it was basement like and the sound wasn't great. Very loud. Young Man opened, and they mainly came across as loud.

Fanfarlo and Michigan

Consequence of Sound reviews the new Fanfarlo album, calling it an "ideal precursor to Spring."

And how cool is this: 12 Michigan Acts you should know, via Paste. Chris Bathgate and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. are #2 and #1. I also really like the Crane Wives.

More New Music: Fanfarlo

I keep realizing just how incomplete my new music previews have been. How could I forget Fanfarlo? NPR Music showcases a new video, "Shiny Things," coming from their upcoming 2012 release. It's already catchy and is added to my most anticipated albums of 2012.

I am also streaming Kathleen Edwards' new one, Voyageur.Very catchy already. Howler and Laura Gibson are also on deck--perhaps they will be one of my first new discoveries of the new year in music?

Weekend Concert Review

We saw the Naked & the Famous on Friday at the 9:30 Club and Fanfarlo at the Red Palace.  A few thoughts here.

More Marling

I listened to a stream of Laura Marling's recent DC concert.  She remains a big favorite of mine. I also heard another new Fanfarlo single, and I'm very excited that is one concert I'm actually going to get a chance to go to.

I'm sad, thanks to the convention, I will miss both Brandi Carlile and Foo Fighters. So many concerts, so little time.
