I'm tired of hearing Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana on DC radio. I loved those tunes back in college, but it's 2011. Here are some picks of what the radio should be playing.

Rediscovering Beirut
I was in World Market of all places and heard Santa Fe on their overhead music, and I thought: damn, I haven't listened to The Rip Tide in a long time. It's a great album. Any chance Beirut will release a new album in 2015? They are playing a handful of music festivals this year.

Awesome Stream of the Day
Beirut at the 9:30 Club. So sorry I missed this, but this is the next best thing. And expect to see Beirut on my best of 2011 lists.

Quiet Thursday
Despite the fact that I've been replaying Frightened Rabbit lately on my ipod, I've been in the mood for a mellow Thursday here at work. Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Beirut have been played thus far. I cannot believe that Bon Iver received so many Grammy nominations. Not that it isn't well-deserved, but he is in no way a "new" artist. And that award ceremony is such a sell-out. Adele seems pre-ordained to win the most prizes, anyway. Sigh.

Monday Playlist
After a lethargic weekend, I was ready for something more upbeat. So I started with the new War on Drugs, now Muse. Perhaps I will follow with some Cold War Kids.
BTW, the newest Beirut was found on itunes. It's terrific, and a nice complement to Bon Iver. And a bonus for it being out nine days before its official release!

New Blog
I usually listen to music all day long at work. It makes the day go by faster, and it helps me to concentrate. Over the five or so years that I've had an ipod, I have added over 5,000 songs to it. I wanted to create this new blog to share some of my favorite tunes, playlists, music sites, discoveries, etc. But also to reflect on the music I am listening to in the here and now...old favorites, current loves, and future favorites.
So to start...I am already in love with the new Beirut album, which is currently streaming on NPR Music. I am a huge fan of NPR Music, and over the past several months, I've gone ahead and bought some of my favorite albums that they've streamed in their first listen series (Telekinesis, Eleanor Friedberger, for example). Beirut was a nice complement to last week Bon Iver concert stream. Mellow, easy to work along with, and soothing. I'm currently listening to Beirut on Spotify, a new current obsession. I will definitely be buying the new album once it's out.
So listen along with me, and I look forward to sharing my favorites, as well as learning about some of your own, too.
