New S. Carey

S. Carey has a new album out today. I like this Bon Iver family tree on Stereogum. From the National to TV on the Radio to Feist to the Shouting Matches to Volcano Choir to Kathleen Edwards to Lykee Li, many favorites are here.

Volcano Choir

Bon Iver has another side project. Volcano Choir will be releasing an album on September 3, and it is lovely. Check out "Byegone," the first single. Lovely lovely.

Kind of New Bon Iver

First there was the Shouting Matches. Next comes Volcano Choir. This single, "Byegone," sounds much like the Bon Iver we loved so much a couple of years ago. "Lush" is just one way to describe this melody. Streaming it now.

Shouting Matches

Bon Iver has a side project called the "Shouting Matches." Pitchfork gave it a somewhat mediocre review, though this should not be compared with his regular stuff. It's a lighter album, from my early listen, and very country-rock rootsy. Take a listen.

A Different Version

This is a lovely version of a lovely Beth/Rest by Bon Iver.

I like the original, but some times alternate versions are better than the recorded version. There's any live version of One by U2 or These Are Days by Natalie Merchant. Or a cover, like Johnny Cash's Hurt or Nirvana's The Man Who Sold the World. Or remixes; Passion Pit comes to mind.

A different version of a song gives it a distinct sound, and maybe can make it a totally different song.

Five for Friday

Bon Iver will be on SNL this weekend. That might even be worth recording (or finding online...who watches SNL, anyway)?

The Kills concert will hopefully be streaming here. Check out "Future Starts Slow."

New from J Tillman.

I really need to go to a music festival. Like Sasquatch.  Bon Iver, Head & the Heart, Shearwater, The Cave Singers, Blitzen Trapper, Blind Pilot, the Joy Formidable, Feist...um, all of my favorites. All of them.

Amazon's Free Music from Raising Artists is always such a good deal. Rumer, Hospitality, and Cloud Nothings are some of the steals they are offering for February.  Download now!

Quiet Thursday

Despite the fact that I've been replaying Frightened Rabbit lately on my ipod, I've been in the mood for a mellow Thursday here at work. Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Beirut have been played thus far. I cannot believe that Bon Iver received so many Grammy nominations. Not that it isn't well-deserved, but he is in no way a "new" artist.  And that award ceremony is such a sell-out.  Adele seems pre-ordained to win the most prizes, anyway. Sigh.
